Rickman House
About this Project
- Location: Kalamazoo, MI
- Project Type: Adaptive Reuse
Rickman House was originally constructed in 1906 as the Rickman Hotel. This Kalamazoo historical landmark was adapted to provide multi-family apartments for 84 low-income, special needs tenants. This multi-family building underwent a complete interior gutting and reconstruction to recreate the apartment building. The greatest structural challenge was to relocate the elevator and stair shaft, allowing for a larger elevator and code-compliant stairs. A second stair shaft was also added to the multi-family building for improved emergency egress. The exterior historic restoration preserved the historical elements of this century-old building.
